Workplace English courses, unlike general English, are never off-the-shelf. At Ohio State University, we use English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course development guidelines to create lessons that are specific to the communication needs of our clients. They tailor integrated-skill lessons to fit the context and authentic communication tasks of the client. Our five levels of original content target the most urgent language needs of the mobility industry and life in North America through needs analysis with our clients and industry research. The lessons are constructed from data provided by the client especially as it relates to communication tasks both in and out of work. We never stop gathering information from learners in order to refine our lessons and present solutions to real communication hurdles. Lessons focus on spoken communication and are supported by pronunciation lessons that focus on sounds that are difficult for learners. The diagram below shows how lessons are developed from start to finish.
